How do you know the perfect gift when you see it? What requirements does it have to meet? Does it just have to meet a certain weight? Does it just have to come from a certain store or have a certain designer’s name on it? And who decides it is the perfect gift; the giver or the receiver? The kind of gifts given at Christmas has changed a great deal over the years.
Sometimes we focus on the giving and on the gifts so much that we miss the fact that what we are celebrating at this time of the year is God’s gift to us. Our gift giving is a reflection of the generous gift that God gave to us, the gift of his Son. This gift from God is for all people, no one is excluded. It is a gift given out of extreme love – a love so immense, so deep, so wonderful and powerful that we can hardly begin to fathom what kind of love it is that would cause God to send us his only begotten son.
Let us consider giving appropriate gifts this Christmas. I am not talking about material gifts. I am talking about more important things. Over two-thousand years ago when the precious baby Jesus was born God was indeed giving the greatest gift the world has ever seen.
Let us open our hearts to the brokenhearted, the homeless, the hungry, the lonely, the sad and weary this Christmas. Let us give the gift of our love and kindness to our friends and family. Let us give the gift of service to others. Let us give the gift of our help to those who are hurting. Let us give the gift of forgiveness to those who have hurt us. Giving these kinds of gifts will result in a joyous and meaningful Christmas and our Saviour will be well pleased with us.
This Christmas may God bless you greatly as you reflect upon the gift of Jesus, the gift that keeps on giving. If you have not received that gift, you can do so today.
