During my personal time with the Lord early this morning, I was prompted to meditate on some verses in Psalms that talk about God’s wings of protection. When I think of wings, I think of a mother bird and a hen taking care of their little ones.
Psalm 91: 1-4, He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
The first thing that I see in these verses is that the wings of God are, for me and for you, a place of protection, satisfaction and a place of refreshment.
The shadow of the Almighty is a safe place to dwell and ultimately it is the only safe place to dwell. God is faithful to protect and deliver. He is our fortress, high tower, the place where we can run to, to be safe. The key to this protection is in the first verse. We must stay close, abide in Him, let him be the Secret Safe place.
I love the imagery in verse 4 of the Psalm, “He will cover you with his feathers“, and under his wings you will find protection. The picture of a parent bird, or a mother hen, wooing its’ chicks and putting them in safety underneath her wings. As the offspring of the bird finds refuge under the wings of his parent, so we can find our refuge under the protection of Almighty God. Too often in this world, we turn to God when it is either convenient for us, or when we have messed up so bad we have nowhere else to turn.
