Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10
We talk about loving someone with all your heart. We don’t say we love someone with all our kidneys or liver.
The heart is used in scripture really most commonly to refer to the mind, the thinking part of us. It does involve emotion which is a part of thought. It’s sort of a symbol of our inner person. As we think in our heart the bible says so are we.
Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life”.
The heart is that part of us from which all the issues of life arise. Doing the will of God from the heart, that’s from the inner person, the inner being. The heart is the source of all the best and worst of us because the heart is really the inside person. The heart therefore is deceitful and desperately wicked, who can know it, said the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 17:9). In Genesis God said every imagination of the thoughts of his heart speaking of man was only evil continually. So the heart is what thinks and feels. The heart is our person, our inner person.
If the issues of life flows out of the heart, then it is absolutely imperative to do a heart scan on a regular basis. We must make sure that we surrender our heart on a daily basis.
People look on the outward appearance. God is always concerned with the heart, with the reality and condition of what is on the inside. Why? Because if the inside of the cup is clean, so will be the outside.
Since the heart is so important to what we think, say and do, we each need to regularly do open heart surgery with the chisel of the word under the guiding hand of the great physician, the Lord Jesus. We accomplish this through the teaching, guiding, convicting ministry of the Holy Spirit. Like a sharp two-edged sword, the word divides the inner man asunder to reveal the true condition and needs of our hearts.
Beloved let us be clear that God’s plan for us today is nothing short of a pure heart. If you were a car, God would want control of your engine. If you were a computer, God would claim the software and the hard drive. But you are a person, so God wants a heart, holy and pure.
Keeping your heart pure is a choice that you make, and there are so many benefits! And once you begin to experience the benefits, you will want to experience more! Pay close attention to matters of the heart. Keep your heart and mind upon the things of God.
Keep your thoughts and motives pure in all you do, and you will have the best spiritual insurance policy for your eternal life! There is nothing like knowing that if Jesus were to return right now, He would find you pure! There would be nothing in the way between you and your Maker!
“Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God.” Matthew 5:8. It is a glorious promise. Keeping yourself pure is worthwhile for a good life on earth, and will benefit you for all eternity!!!
