Where Is God When I Am Hurting?

Reference Scriptures: Isaiah 40:1-31 Jeremiah 39:1-14; Lamentations 5:19-22; Psalm 137

Do you ever feel like hope is almost lost? That you are going to never see better days?

The hurts we experience may stem from abandonment or abuse, sorrow and loss, fears and failures, setbacks, chronic illness and pain and the list goes on. We all hurt for a variety of reasons.

The stories of suffering remain in the scriptures for a reason. Through them, we can gain an insight of dealing with our own sufferings.

Sometimes God’s hand of comfort and His compassion toward us in our pain and sorrow is so wonderful we can’t describe it. He appears on the scene of our calamity with assistance and provision and we stand in awe of His presence.

At other times however, He seems distant and disinterested, like He’s moved and hasn’t left a forwarding address. He has all the power and provision necessary to alleviate our misery but He doesn’t seem to be lifting a finger to come to our rescue.

It’s at times like that when our faith is tested. Our cries for help seem to go unanswered. If we’re not careful we can become fearful and disillusioned with God when we’re hurting.

Sad to say that I let that happen to me somewhat when I found out someone dear to me had cancer. The main problem was that it seemed so unfair from a human standpoint. Why would this happen to a faithful follower of Christ?

I must be honest there were days when I got frustrated and above all I was really hurting. I was mainly hurting because I hated to witness her suffering. And I know many of you know those feelings all too well.

But the amazing thing is I learned a lot about life and having a real relationship with God and the importance of my relationship with others.

This daughter of God had peace with God throughout her suffering. She had a winning faith. Yes she struggled greatly with the weight of her dilemma, but she didn’t turn her back on God. Instead she steadily kept on progressing in her faith.

It was then I prayed earnestly daily and wanted to learn to trust God and grow in my faith in Him even when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds.

It hasn’t always been easy and I haven’t always expressed the faith in God that I should have, but God is patient and longsuffering and His word shows us the way. I’ve searched for God’s hand of comfort and wisdom several times and sometimes I didn’t find Him right away. And I’m sure you can relate.

God speaks to you today through the Prophet Isaiah and wants you to know He understands what you are going through. He promises that if you wait on Him and trust Him you will find your strength renewed.

No matter the problem, pain or pressure you are facing right now, God cares and is concerned with the things that concern you. Being a child of God does not exempt you from hurting, difficult times.
